There are times when you need to access Mac-formatted disks or Mac-specific files (such as .dmg files) and you need to do that on your Windows-powered machine. And when this happens, you will want to have the functionality provided by the Acute Systems-developed application TransMac by your side.

To get to the functionality TransMac has to offer, you will first have to download and install the application. Both processes will take little time to complete. The download weighs in at 1.4MB, which means that it will be done in a blink. Installing the application is a simple matter of clicking through the screens presented by the setup wizard. There are few of them, so you will be done in a blink as well.

With TransMac installed on your system, you can use your Windows-powered PC to access Mac disks and Mac files. And more to the point, you can read and write Mac format disks, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray media, as well as disk image files (.dmg and sparseimage files). You can create, read, and write Mac disk image files, convert .dmg files to ISO, burn Mac format media (CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray), format disks so they can be used by Macs, and access Mac volumes on boot drive.

The sort of functionality TransMac has to offer is not meant for the regular user, but for the advanced user who needs to access Mac files on a PC – and that is obvious in how the interface is laid out. It is a simple, practical interface that puts the emphasis on functionality, not on eye candy. It seems that everything is meant to help you get the job done as fast as possible, and that is definitely a good thing.

Get TransMac, install it on your Windows-powered PC (any version from Windows 2003 up to Windows 7), and you will be able to enjoy the functionality it has to offer for free for a trial period of 15 days. Once the 15-day evaluation period is over, TransMac will no longer run, unless you provide a valid license key.

There’s no eye candy with TransMac, just functionality that advanced users will appreciate: access Mac-disks and Mac-specific files on a Windows-powered PC.

Pros

It will take little time to download and install TransMac on your Windows PC (just about any version of the Microsoft-developed operating system). All the functionality you need to access Mac-disks and Mac-specific files on a PC. Burn ISO and .dmg files. The interface is focused on helping you get things done fast. You can test what TransMac can do for an evaluation period of 15 days.

Cons

Due to the extra security (UAC) in Windows 7 and Vista, even users with administrator privileges may not be able to access fixed disks.
